Economical activities

Until 1974, the most important economic activity was the agriculture. During the first three quarters of the century, a lot of the unirrigated lands were converted into irrigated lands. The main crops in the unirrigated lands were the vineyard, the olive trees, the cereals and the hazel trees. The fruit trees were less important. The petrochemical complex bought some of the lands and this made the number of cultivated lands to decrease.

Nowadays, the refinery and the industries that provide it some products, are the places were most of the active population work. Therefore, the refinery is the most important focus of income for the village.

In 1970, more than half of the population used to work in the primary sector, and about 26.55% of it used to work in the secondary sector. Six years later, in 1976, the secondary sector reached the first position, and in the primary and third sectors had the 27.92% of the working people.

The fact that the industry was installed in the township has been the responsible of a large migration of people to the village, and this has caused a very bid demographic increase in the last ten years.
